Welcome to the Big Sky Practical Shooting Club

Missoula, Montana

Why We Are Here

Maybe you've shot before, maybe you haven't. Or maybe you've grown tired of shooting pinecones in the woods or tin cans with your neighbor in his field. Or perhaps you've exercised your right to own a firearm, acquired a concealed carry permit, and are now wondering where and how you can hone your shooting skills in a sporting, "non-Rambo" environment.

Well, you are not alone. Some of those same thoughts occurred to a group of forward-thinking folks back in 1984 in Missoula, Montana, when they decided to form the Big Sky Practical Shooting Club and get involved in the growing sport of "Practical Shooting."

Practical Shooting (a sport now practiced in nearly 40 countries) is a fun, fast-paced, action shooting sport, using courses of fire and scenarios that challenge your mind, your body, and your hardware as you explore the limits of the man-machine combination.  It features multiple targets, moving targets, partial targets, knock-down steel targets, no-shoot targets that cover or obscure "shoot" targets, barricades, doors, windows, walls, and tables.  All these and other props are mixed together by course designers to create constantly changing situations which challenge the competitor to think and shoot.  The only restrictions on course designers pertain to safety and use of standardized targets; beyond that, the Big Sky's the limit.

About Us

Now let's explain a little about our club. The Big Sky Practical Shooting Club (BSPSC) is affiliated with the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA), which is the governing body for Practical Shooting in America. In turn, USPSA is affiliated with the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) (pronounced "ip-sick"), the world governing body for Practical Shooting. Most of our matches are conducted under USPSA sanction using USPSA rules and official targets.

BSPSC shoots its practices and matches at one of the most scenic ranges in the State of Montana--the Deer Creek Shooting Center in East Missoula--which is owned and managed by the Western Montana Fish & Game Association (WMF&GA). The Deer Creek range has multiple outdoor bays ranging in size from 25 yards to 300 yards in length, covered shooting benches, a meeting room, and the all-important bathroom facilities.

The main focus of BSPSC activities is from March to October when we hold a monthly match, usually on the second Sunday of the month. Our matches draw shooters from throughout Montana, our neighboring states, and even our brethren from Canada. The skill levels of our shooters range from beginner to pretty darn good. Most match fees are a bargain at $20.

If you have any questions concerning the club, our matches, or practical shooting in general, please feel free to contact one of our officers or directors.

We sincerely hope to see you this season.

Good Shooting!!
